A broad definition of politics is the activity through which people make and change the general rules they live by. Politics therefore is related to issues of conflict and cooperation. Politics is inevitable in places where people live together, whether it be within a nation, or even as simple as, within a family. People living together would naturally engage in cooperation in order to influence the rules they live according to.
However, people with their diverse characteristics and interests, would naturally fight each other because of their disagreement with the general rules they live under. At the heart of politics therefore, is the search for the best way to manage and resolve conflicts. The most common view is that it is what government engages in every day; however, politics is practiced in everyday life, even on the most mundane of situations.
Politics in everyday life is engaging in compromise and decision making largely for resolving conflicts.
Politics and power is significantly related. Conflict is inevitable and those who have power, would always have a higher chance of resolving the conflict and getting their way. However, this does not mean that politics is the tool of the powerful to get what they want through violence or coercion. In fact, politics focuses on how to resolve problems through conciliation rather than force. In the office, politics can be observed in how organizations are treated as socio-political systems.
Hence, strategic choice is related to a model of organizations wherein organizational learning and adaptation goes towards the shifting forces of the politics of organizations. It has a deterministic view which was inadequate because whoever has the power to direct the organization fails to give attention to the agency of choice. Hence, the powerful people in the organization are the ones who decide upon the courses of strategic action to be done. There is a need for formal approval by the board which is actually a formal confirmation of the decision that has been agreed upon before the actual meeting.
The next move is to explain to the other committee members and gain support of a far wider range of people so that a strategy can help make things happen. Strategy is driven solely by competitive advantage but there will be cases where a vision or strategic intent that can determine long-term direction will make strategic choices work for the means rather than direction. Strategic choice is about deciding between different options. In implementation, the options can be on what capabilities and resources are needed and how to build them. These options are usually interrelated since there is a need to identify only a few strategic options which can be made up of related options. Strategic choice is about comparing strategic options both politically and logically. The manner of choosing the strategic choice is like a logical comparison of strategic options. The decision making process is political as it is essential that those who will implement the strategy must support the choice that has been made.
