While we always remind the young ones to brush their teeth and to refrain from eating sweets, most of us adults forget to take care of our own dental health…until the need to visit the dentist arises. When this happens frequently or on a daily rate, your enamel and gums will be at risk of decay. Aside from minimizing your sugar intake, it also helps to brush and floss your teeth after every meal. Ditch carbonated drinks Who doesn’t love fizzy drinks? While it is hardly possible to say goodbye to carbonated beverages completely, it is advised that you lessen your intake of these ultra-sweet drinks. First, a soda’s phosphoric acid and citric acid may taste and feel irresistibly good inside your mouth, but do you know that they corrode the calcium in your teeth? To avoid tooth decay and other oral problems, switch to water or other naturally-produced drinks instead. Quit smoking It may sound extreme for smokers but it’s a must if you want to enjoy total mouth health. Ditching carbonated drinks and sugary food is nothing when the nicotine and tar in cigarettes turn your teeth yellow and degrade them. Moreover, tobacco chemicals and byproducts have been proven to cause certain types of cancer. Those cautionary labels on cigarette boxes exist for a reason. Floss regularly The habit of flossing doesn’t come easy to most people. However, you’ll get used to it once you start feeling and seeing the difference. Some brushes, even those prescribed by dentists, may still leave dirt on the surface and in between teeth. Dental flossing helps you clean those hard-to-reach areas, eliminating bacteria that cause tooth decay and bad breath. Choose the right toothbrush Not all toothbrushes are the same. You need one that will suit your brushing habits and your gums’ sensitivity. Nevertheless, it always helps to use a brush with fine and soft bristles. This will prevent too much friction on the teeth as well as force on the gums, which usually causes bleeding. These are just some of the ways you can keep your teeth healthy, clean and strong. It’s never too late to keep your dental habits in check to avoid mouth problems and to stop current present ones in their tracks. Visits to a dentist at least twice a year is also essential.
